Trulli Italy

Are you looking for an accommodation with unique design for your next holiday in Italy? Have you heard of trulli? Trullo is a traditional Apulian hut, built with dry stone and a conical roof. This style of construction is typical for the Itria Valley. Trulli were originally built for storage units around the 16th century, but many trulli have now been refurbished inside and out, making them the perfect accommodation for one special holiday in Italy.

These ancient houses are perfect for summer and winter, thanks to the limestone they are made of. It works as an isolator from the hot summers and colder winter temperatures. Trulli vary in size as well. There are spacious houses that can fit up to 12 people. Or if privacy is what you are looking for, there are more intimate trulli for 2-4 people. Many of them are pet friendly, equipped with the latest fashion furniture and some of them even have swimming pools. You can also eat some delicious fruit and veggies from the organic garden in the back. Tv and internet are also included, as well as the holiday needed barbecue grill.

Italy is blessed with a variety of scenic landscapes

As mentioned above trulli can mostly be found in Itria Valley in the region of Puglia. This region is famous for its expanses of olive trees as far as the eye can see and the red soils in the valley. The Castellana Caves are located in this area as well. There you can find the first and only vast cavern of its kind connected with the “outside world,” and the White Grotto in all its beauty. But the region has a lot more to offer than the stunning countryside of the Valley of the Trulli as some call Itria.

Puglia or also known as Apulia has many forests, beaches and mountainous terrain making the landscape very diversified. You can go check out the Tremiti Islands while in the area. This archipelago consists of the islands of San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio and the uninhabited Pianosa. The largest is San Nicola filled with ravines and caves, surrounded by crystal-clear waters. The Lama D’Antico Rock Park is a must for tourists. Explore the rock structures left here from an ancient village more than 500 years ago. From a church carved into the rocks to cave dwellings and caves used as work-shops. The entire itinerary is set in a wonderful natural habitat rich of olive groves and Mediterranean maquis. You can also stop by the ancient forest of Bosco delle Pianelle Natural Reserve or spend an enjoyable day at the beaches of Lido onda blu. At the center of Apulia is situated the Botanical Conservatory "I Giardini di Pomona". It is preserving the biodiversity of different plant species, providing comfortable accommodations with low impact. The conservatory has more than 800 antique fruit tree varieties, including 560 fig tree species and pomegranate collection with 45 varieties.

Puglia is also home to two national parks, the Alta Murgia National Park and Gargano National Park. The Gargano National Park includes also the Tremiti Islands archipelago and the wetlands Lago Salso. It is one of the most appreciated areas, unique for the decrease of fires and for the politics of environmental awareness. The Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia was established in 2004. It is part of a larger Special Protection Area established to protect the grass steppe, lesser kestrel's habitat.

Despite that only 7% of the region is protected areas the flora and fauna here are very diverse. The once rich forest territory is now covered by Mediterranean maquis and rocky pastures. Among the arboreal species we find the Aleppo Pine and holm-oak. The Mediterranean maquis consists mostly from shrubs like Lentisk, the Broom, the maritime Cistus, the thorny Oak tree, the Blackberry bush and so on. Typical representatives of the fauna are the badger, the fox, the porcupine, the mole, the weasel and the squirrel. The protected areas offer a refuge for many species. In the woods of the Gargano, we can find the roe which is also the symbol of the park. The moist zones give hospitality to numerous migratory birds, such as the rare flamingo. There are also the sparrow-hawk which feeds on the hen-pheasant, a typical and rare species of the steppe areas.

A holiday filled with adventure

If visiting Puglia, the first place you should go is the Zoo Safari. It is the largest park in Italy and second largest in Europe. The car route is approximately 6 kilometers and you can observe not only the animals of the savannah but also species typical of other climates and ecosystems. Animals roam freely and you are more than welcome to take photos and videos of them just a few meters away. After the car safari continues on foot to the aquariums, the Metrozoo, the lake of mammals and the monkey village.

If you wake up early in the morning you should go snorkeling in the clear waters of Lido Ottagono. Observe dozens of varieties of fish in their thousands and octopi. Or take a 3-hour boat trip and cross the two seas and discover the fantastic caves that line the coast of Salento. Snorkeling stop is also provided in the deep blue waters. Or take you kids for a nice afternoon at the beach. Try out one of the many cycling paths with your partner or have a calm hike in the mesmerizing countryside.

Sun,sun and even more sun

The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot, dry and sunny summers and mild, rainy winters. Snowfall, especially on the coast, is rare but has occurred from time to time. Apulia is among the hottest and driest regions of Italy in summer with temperatures sometimes reaching up to and above 40 °C.
