What does the nature of Friesland offer?

Friesland's nature is so diverse. Because of the rare and distinct landscape qualities there are two of the National Landscapes of Netherlands here - Southwest Fryslân and Noardlike Fryske Walden. The Noardlike Fryske Walden is characterized by alder avenues, hedgerows, pingos, and ditches and trees in straight lines. Trees reach around a meter and a half and are called Dykswâlen. Southwest Fryslân has heap villages that merge into the forests of the Gaasterland, meadows with dikes. Friesland is the perfect place for birdwatchers. All kinds of forest, marsh and meadow species can be found around. Many kinds of mammals can be seen while hiking on the many nature trails, like deer or very agile rabbits and hares. Or maybe a busy hedgehog standing in your way, rushing to beat the squirrels and collecting more goods for the winter months. And for the lucky ones, pine marten might pop up from the vegetation. They are very rare and quite large. Two of the most commonly encountered predators are polecat and ermine.

You can split Friesland into parts. The Northern part is where most of the National parks are located. Southeast is where the sandy dunes can be found. It's very different from the rest of Friesland. And the Southwest part is where you can find most of the cities. The region is called Waterland, given the fact that it is covered largely by water.

Drents Friese Wold National Park is a must if you want to have a nice and relaxing walk amongst flood lands, forest and sandy dunes all in one afternoon. It is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. Because of its proportions you are assured that you will have a quiet and calm walk without bumping into any other visitors. Huge array of wildlife finds shelter here. De Alde Feanen National Park is the wettest of the national parks in Friesland, so if you're visiting makes sure you brought your rubber boots. Sea eagles can be seen soaring above these flat flood lands filled with more than 450 plant species and +100 species of birds. While other parks are great for visiting in the day, Lauwersmeer National Park is an exception. Nominated officially 'Dark Sky Park', very little light pollution reaches the park, making it a hot spot for every sky admirer.

Have fun outside!

As mentioned above, one of the best places to take your telescope and peer into the sky is Lauwersmeer National Park. It even has a platform in it where you can lay down and observe the countless stars. Or if you want to come even closer to the cosmos, visit Franker and the Eise Eisinga Planetarium. What's amazing about it is that it is the oldest working planetarium in the world.

Given the fact that Friesland consists mostly from water, paddle boarding is very popular amongst the visitors. With all of its lakes and canals you can easily go on for a whole day, enjoying the beautiful scenery around you. Or you can get a lesson in kite or windsurfing. As you already know the sky at night is amazing there, so that’s why it is possible to book a night sailing in the Alde Feanen National Park. Water activities such as canoeing and fishing are also available there. Mudflats are a hotspot for hikers in Friesland. Walk on the shallow waters, but keep in mind in some places it can get as deep as your waist and also it will be quite challenging walking in those muddy fields.

While hiking in the forests you might encounter one of the many watchtowers there. The highest is Bosbergtoren in Appelscha, reaching 33 meters high. If you catch the right weather conditions you can even spot the cities of Groningen and Leeuwarden. Speaking of, you can stop by in Groningen and have a snack or enjoy a glass of wine and dinner in one of the many restaurants there.

When should you visit Friesland?

Friesland is located in the north parts of the Netherlands therefore the temperatures might be a bit lower than the average for the country. It has a maritime climate, because it is close to the sea. Maritime climate regions might experience cool summers and mild winters, with small differences in the temperature range in between seasons. This is because water has a much higher heat capacity than soil and rock. Summer is the best season to visit, because there is a little chance of precipitation. But keep in mind that annually the country is hit with a heatwave lasting a couple of weeks, so make sure you brought your sunscreen.
