Tiny house Belgium
As a relatively small country located between the Netherlands, Germany, and France, Belgium does not lack in its natural and cultural diversity. From medieval fairytale villages and castles to long stretching nature reserves and ghost towns, this country is absolutely worth a visit. Besides being famous for its beer, chocolate, fries, and a statue of a urinating boy in Brussels, there are much natural landscapes to explore. Belgium is divided in two parts: you have the Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north and the French-speaking Wallonia in the south. During your stay in Flanders, you can enjoy the coastline, nature reserves, and visit cities like Antwerp, Ghent, and Bruges. For your stay in Wallonia, you can enjoy vast forests, woodlands, and valleys shaped by rivers.
What better way to explore the beautiful Belgium in one of our tiny houses? Whether you want a cabin in the forest in the Ardennes, want to explore the Kempen or visit the beach, with your accommodation at Nature house your next holiday in nature is guaranteed. Our tiny houses are perfect for those who do not need much from their accommodation or are looking for a romantic getaway.
From rollings hills and rivers to sandy areas with coastlines
Even though Belgium has a small surface area, it still has a rich and diverse plant and animal world. More than 20% is forested and the wide variety in habitats make it home to many species of birds, plants, and mammals. In total you can find more than 1300 species of vascular plants, over 5000 species of fungi and 700 species of leaf mosses. Most of the species are Atlantic and Central European species but some of the sub-Mediterranean flora, such as the palm tree and the Apennine rockrose, grow in Belgium. Belgium has different kinds of landscapes with thus different kinds of vegetation.
On the dunes along the coast, mostly grass grows and in the higher parts of Belgium certain submontane plants grow. Flanders is woody and the Flemish Kempen are mainly covered by heather. In the Ardennes you can find beech forests and high-stemmed fir. The extensive presence of bogs leads to mosses and wool grass. The southern Lorraine area has due to its mild climate some Mediterranean species. The forests here consist of beech, oak, and hornbeam. Although Belgium is not popular for its flowers, it’s actually a paradise for the lovers of blossoms. If you’re staying in a Belgium nature house in the Ardennes region, then be sure to visit the Hallerbos forest. In mid-April the hyacinths are blooming to create a purple carpet over the whole woodland.
Due to the increase in urbanization a lot of animal species in Belgium are threatened such as the wild cat, otter, adder, and cormorant. There are several protection programs to help improve the habitat and repopulation of these animals. Animals that are more commonly found throughout Belgium are the mole, hedgehog, rabbit, hare, squirrel, mice, foxes, bats, and the stone marten. The red deer only lives in the Ardennes and the roe and wild boar as well and sometimes in the Kempen. There are approximately 350 bird species living in Belgium of which many are migrants.
Perfect destination for outdoor activities
Belgium is absolutely a great place for outdoor activity lovers but the kind of activities you can do vary on the area you are visiting, so we will highlight some great activities per area so you can choose the perfect destination for your holiday.
If you want an adventurous holiday with mountain biking through vast forests, visit underground caves, go canoeing or rafting on a river, the Ardennes are the perfect location for you. This area is all about testing your stamina and limits. There are many (mountain) bike trails, for advanced people but also for beginners. You can also decide to explore the forests, valleys, and moorlands by foot and try to spot the Belgian wildlife. For the people who are not afraid of heights, you can go for a fun climbing experience up in the trees. If you want to see the underground of Europe, go on a guided tour in one of the hidden caves.
For the people who really want to test their stamina on a bike can go on the famous tour of Flanders. The tour takes you along cobbled roads, demanding climbs, and beautiful nature. In Flanders there are many nature reserves and agricultural areas. Besides exploring the nature reserves, there are also charming cities which are absolutely worth a visit as well, such as Bruges which is straight out of a fairytale, Ghent, and Antwerp. As for West Flanders, it offers you the beauty of the Belgian coastline. It is a great destination for summer to lay on the beach, read a book, go sailing, picnicking, or undertake other kinds of water activities. But even outside of the summer season it is relaxing to take long walks on the beach.
Situated in the Ardennes is the town Spa, where the term spa originates from. It is renowned for its natural mineral springs where you can relax and nearby is the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, where every year the Belgian Grand Prix of Formula 1 is held. If you want to be transported back in time Bruges is a beautiful, and romantic, city to visit. Part of the center is an UNESCO world heritage site. It is truly one of the most picturesque places in Belgium; go on a boat tour, explore beer breweries, or take walk through the small streets across the bridges and along the water.
Belgian highlights
Eifel nature park
When you are visiting Belgium, you should definitely visit its oldest and largest nature reserve. This nature reserve lies not only in Belgium but in Germany as well. It offers you a very diverse landscape and a lot of flora and fauna. Throughout this park you can find wooded areas, valleys, watercourses, rolling mountains, groves, and charming villages. The highest point of the Benelux can be found in the park. The reserve is one of the coldest and wettest parts of Belgium, so be prepared when you are visiting. The mist and low clouds can give it an eerie impression. The abundance of heathers and turf moors play a significant role in protecting the biodiversity and the regulation of the water. Some animals you can spot in the park are the wild boar, roe deer, stonechat, black grouse, or the northern shrike.
The Sonian forest
Only minutes away from the bustling center of Brussels, this 4000 hectares of woodland of beeches and oaks is a unspoiled part of nature with an UNESCO world heritage status. Some of the trees more than 200 years old. Due to human influence, the forest has a reduced variety of flora and fauna. At this point five endangered species of bats live in the forest. Other protected animals are the black woodpecker and the great crested newt. Furthermore, the forest is a paradise of several outdoor activities such as horse riding, hiking, and cycling.
National park Hoge Kempen
This national park mostly covers the entire province of Antwerp and stretches out to Limburg and the northern part of Flemish Brabant in the Netherlands. An important characteristic of the Kempen is its sandy soil. Furthermore, the environment is mostly coniferous trees and heath land but there are also dunes, marshes, ponds, and dry valleys. In the park there is over 200 km of hiking trails and you also have the opportunity to cycle. Within the national park there are multiple nature reserves with their own characteristics. The Hoge Kempen are home to more than 6000 species of flora and fauna, such as deer, buzzards, falcons, hawks, nightjars, and smooth snakes.
Het Zwin
Known as the international bird airport at the Belgian coast, Zwin Nature park is a paradise for bird lovers. It is located at the border between Flanders and the Netherlands and captured between dunes and a high dike. It is an important area for flora and fauna. Het Zwin can be seen as an intertidal area as twice a day a large amount of sea water streams into the area. The salty water creates a unique biotope such as marshes and flats. The park is not only a great breeding place for birds, they also use it as their stop on their long journeys. More than half of all the bird species in Belgium can be found here. If you do not want to miss any highlights you can enjoy a guided tour. At any time of the year, you can visit the park and observe the cormorant, curlew, oystercatcher, redshank, greylag goose, even the white stork!
Where to book your Nature house
Namur
Located between two rivers and known as the capital of Wallonia, Namur is a great place for your stay. With its location at the head of the Ardennes has made it a popular place for nature lovers. The cobblestones lanes are surrounded by cafes, bookstores and vintage shops. Visiting the citadel, an UNESCO site, taking a boat trip, and going on adventure in the Ardennes are some of the highlights. Throughout the province of Namur there are a lot of exciting hiking trails you can do to explore the vast forests, caves, and riverbeds of Belgium. You can also visit one of the many caves in the area and see Europe underground.
Antwerp
When you hear of Antwerp you might think of Belgium’s second biggest city, with a large port, impressive cathedral, cobble stone lanes, and magnet for diamond dealers. However, Antwerp is more than a city with a medieval atmosphere. Throughout the entire province of Antwerp there are many nature reserves and picturesque villages such as Lier, Kessel, and Turnhout. Having such a big port also has its advantages for flora and fauna. The saltmarshes and mudflats are home to fish, birds, and horses who graze in the meadows. Even some rare species such as the tern, sand martin, and natterjack toad can be found.
Luxembourg
This is the southernmost province of Belgium and about 80% of the area is part of the densely wooded Ardennes. It is the perfect location for a tranquil holiday surrounded by nature. Through the rolling hills many rivers flow which are perfect for a kayaking trip. The forests offer a good balance between deciduous trees and coniferous trees. Because of the many rivers, hills, and forests it offers a great deal of hiking, cycling and mountain biking trails. The highest point in the province of Luxembourg is the Baraque de Fraiture, a 651-meter-high mountain, where around the highest peaks there are several days a year opportunities for winter sports. If you want to dive a bit into the Belgian history, visit one of the many castles or ruins.
Clouds, rain, sun, and moderate temperatures
The overall climate of Belgium is cool and wet because it is mainly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. In the south-east, the climate is a bit more continental and unstable. Precipitation is frequent but not extremely abundant. It rains less in the coastal areas and they receive slightly more sun as well. Winter is cold on the coast but generally not freezing. As you go more inland, the temperature decreases and the rain frequency increases. In the Ardennes the winter is colder, because of the altitude and the distance from the sea. Summers on the coast are pretty cool with an average temperature of 22 degrees whereas in the Ardennes the temperatures are lower and thunderstorms occur more frequently. It could happen that Belgium is reached by Mediterranean air masses and the temperatures rise to 30 degrees.
The best time to visit Belgium is from mid-May until mid-September; the temperatures are mild, and the sky can be cloudy but the chances on a sunny day are the highest. The weather in the winter months tends to be dark and rainy so not the perfect time to undertake a lot of outdoor activities. Before your stay make sure you check the weather to plan your trip and you know what to pack.
