Flora and fauna of Spain

Various landscape and climatic conditions have as their direct consequence no less richness of flora and fauna - the southernmost regions clearly resemble Africa, the nature of the northern provinces is akin to European countries.

Forests have nearly 1000 plant species and occupy about a third of the land area. The central regions are characterized by evergreen oak forests, in which there are many chestnuts, birches and ash trees that are familiar to us. Pine and beech groves are numerous. The rocky foothills are favored by cypresses, cork oaks, lindens and chestnuts - representatives of the Mediterranean type of vegetation. In the extreme south, there are low fellows of palm trees "hamerops" and this is the only place in the kingdom where palm trees have taken root. The plateaus of the central provinces and the southeastern coast are mainly decorated with herbs and shrubs: thyme, tamaris, rosemary, etc.

The natural world of the Canary Islands is unique: more than half of the plants are endemic to the region(species not found anywhere else on the planet). Despite the fact that a third of the flora are representatives of ancient relict forms that died out thousands of years ago. You can see their surviving descendants only on these pieces of land. Which is unusual to the point of almost impossible given the volcanic origins of the islands.

Spain is called "European Eden" - the animal world is unusually wide and varied. The fauna of the north is close to the continental one - many familiar herbivores(deer, chamois, squirrels and hares) and predators live here: wolves, martens, foxes and badgers. Bears are also found in the Cantabrian mountains. In numerous forests, wild boars are often encountered, which can be incredibly dangerous. Exotic species prefer the Mediterranean coast of the south of the peninsula(chameleons, viverras, Spanish hare, Algerian hedgehog, Egyptian mongooses). Incredibly graceful flamingos, lynxes and proud Andalusian eagles complete the colorful picture.

The authorities and citizens show a sincere concern for the preservation of the natural splendor of Spain, which is clearly evidenced by the colossal number of state and private nature parks and reserves, the largest being the Pyrenean Ordos, Teide, Cabrera National Park and Gredos.

Activities

If you find yourself in Spain on the Mediterranean coast, be sure to come to Valencia. The recommended time for a visit is at least a week: Valencia is simply overflowing with relics, the spirit of history that oozes from under each stone, and even seven days will seem too little for you. People who are already familiar with Spain from other cities, perhaps, should get to know Valencia as an unusually soft, romantic city with a touch of aristocratic provincial charm. If you are a couple in love, then you will not find a more suitable place on the coasts of Spain, where you can retire away from noisy tourists and enjoy the joy of communication. In the city, thanks to the efforts of the administration, it was possible to arrange countless benches and squares, flower beds and shady alleys, where you just want to sit for half an hour, dream about something magical, admiring the ancient bell towers and cathedrals visible among the crowns of century-old lime trees.

The streets of the historic center of Valencia are clean and homely, there are no hype sales with screams and crowds, like in Madrid. Everything here is filled with silence, and every turn opens up such views that you immediately want to buy a quill pen, an inkwell and write a quatrain dedicated to your "school love". In this city you will not be able to get lost or get tired, and even among the ancient houses with peeling paint, where, at first glance, there are only dead ends all around, the narrow streets of the compact Old Town will neatly lead you in a few minutes to one of the beautiful marble-paved squares. Many tiny courtyards, each of which is no more than twenty meters in diameter, will shelter from the heat on a summer day and wrap the traveler in the pacifying murmur of a mini-fountain, giving inexplicable peace of mind.

If you are an avid driver, then do not deny yourself the pleasure of visiting Valencia by car. For example, in spring, hundreds of kilometers before the city limits, charming blooming "seas" will stretch on both sides of the track. Valencia is an agrarian region, and at this time cherries and almonds are in full bloom, and the collection of citrus fruits continues, bright carpets of which spread for tens of kilometers along the route. If you go from Barcelona, the road will take no more than three hours, along the way you will meet several modern recreation centers, where they have excellent food and always have freshly squeezed orange juice. Well, at the very least, you are almost guaranteed not to find yourself in a traffic jam, because Valencia leads the way in the question of the thoughtfulness of urban traffic in Spain.

If you find yourself on the beach in the evening, you can walk east towards the city limits. There you will visit a modest bay with a small sea restaurant, opposite which modern high-rise buildings rise right from the sea surface in the style of "mini-Venice". By the way, the beaches of Valencia are considered the cleanest in Europe, and UNESCO has rated them in six Blue Flags(Blue Flag means the highest quality). Visit this piece of paradise once, you will not regret it.

Climate

The region is dominated by a mild Mediterranean climate, the average annual temperature in Valencia is +18°C. Summer's not hot here, the average temperature is between +24°С and +28°С. Winter in the city is quite warm, the average January temperature varies between +10°С and +14°С.
