The rich landscape of Spain has contributed to the development of hundreds of must-see natural attractions. The biodiversity in the country is spectacular and awaits on every corner in the metropolitan areas and outside of them – in the traditional Spanish countryside. Spain is among one of the few countries in Europe, which you can visit year-round, especially if you want to explore the natural wonders outside the peak season.

Nature with many faces

A popular destination for mountain-enthusiasts and those who cherish amazing mountain panoramas is the Picos de Europa National Park in the Cantabrian Mountains. Ice and rain have worked together thousands of years to give birth to a magnificent karst rock system. As well as presenting a remarkable landscape, this area is also home to an emblematic ecosystem of plants and animal species, typical for Spain such as the Iberian wolf. The interesting fact for this natural reserve is that it is the only one which is populated: local people live a sweet life of tranquility, while huge peaks hang over their picturesque village houses.

Monfragüe National Park is another favorite destination for our team. This is among the last territories in Europe and in the world, which present an unspoiled ecosystem. This flourishing biodiversity has taken place at the meeting point of rivers Tajo and Tiétar. Hundreds of meters of vertical rocks, a peaceful gorge in between them has become the home to animal and plant species, and especially favored by birdwatchers looking to spot a Spanish imperial eagle or a black vulture.

Endless activities to discover Spain

Every national park, natural reserve or simply a natural area provides a lot of possibilities for active discovery of Spain. National parks have an established route system, suitable for hikers of all levels, while the provinces of Catalonia, Aragon and Andalusia entertain visitors to their winter ski resorts during the winter months.

Except for the spectacular views, Picos de Europa is famous for the abundance of hiking trails which you can easily discover on your own or on a guided tour. If you prefer a more laid back experience, opt for the Fuente De cable car to be able to enjoy the height of the peaks, without the strenuous hike, and head to the villages afterwards to try the local dishes, for which this region is also known.
