The province of Alava is located in the north of Spain. Although Alava lies between the high mountains of Pico de Europa and the Pyrenees, the landscape in the province itself is relatively flat or at most hilly. The climate is warm and dry, so the vegetation is also sparse. However, there are also many special nature reserves that you can visit from your holiday home. From your holiday home you can also visit the capital of the province, Victoria-Gasteiz. This city is by far the most important place in Alava, and therefore cultural festivities are regularly organized and you can visit several historical buildings.

Nature in Alava

The Gorbeia Natural Park is located in the northwest of Alava. When you visit this area from your cottage, you will have numerous opportunities for special walks through hilly forest areas. The forests are interspersed with streams, grasslands, fields and other open spaces. Further east in the region, you can visit two large lakes from your holiday home, namely Embalse de Urrunaga and Embalse Ullíbarra-Gamboa. On the banks of the lakes you will find forests, small fields and cosy villages. All this often results in picturesque landscapes. Lovers can visit the botanical gardens and ruins of Santa Catalina.

The varied landscape and the small-scale arable farming make Alava a very suitable place for all kinds of plants and animals. When you are in the middle of nature from your holiday home, you may encounter many species of birds and insects. On stony places lives the blue rock thrush. If you keep a close eye on the air, you can certainly discover a black kite or griffon vulture. Colourful birds such as the red partridge and bee-eater are also found in the province. Besides birds, there are many plants and insects in Alava. On flowery grasslands and forest edges you can encounter numerous species of butterflies, such as the Spanish checkerboard and the cleopatra.
