The province of Alava is located in the north of Spain. Although Alava lies between the high mountains of Pico de Europa and the Pyrenees, the landscape in the province itself is relatively flat or at most hilly. If you keep a close eye on the air, you can certainly discover a black kite or griffon vulture. Colourful birds such as the red partridge and bee-eater are also found in the province. On flowery grasslands and forest edges you can encounter numerous species of butterflies, such as the Spanish checkerboard and the cleopatra.
