The area around Winterswijk belongs to the National Landscape with its Korenburger-, Wooldse- and Meddoseveen, Bekendelle. Also special are the for this region so characteristic Scholte farms. Scholten farms are stately farmhouses in the midst of large groups of trees. Scholtenboeren had a privileged position in the local community until well into the nineteenth century. They were wealthy farmers with a lot of land in their possession, parts of which they leased to small farmers. Moreover, they acted on behalf of the (noble) landowner as enforcers of order and law. They also took care of the landscape. The characteristic coulisse landscape around Winterswijk, an alternation of wooded areas, hedgerows, streams and groups of trees is partly due to them.
