The castle of Nidastore-"nest of the asterors," or hawks that were used for hunting in the Middle Ages-is the northernmost castle in Arcevia, bordering the province of Pesaro. Nidastore arose in the mid-12th century and was always disputed between the Bishop of Fossombrone and Rocca Contrada. In 1408 the castle was granted to the Bishop's nephew Raniero di Taddeo dei Ranieri di Pesaro, who was killed by exiles from Rocca Contrada. Linked to this affair is the tradition that Ranieri was killed by the inhabitants of Nidastore themselves following his claim to exercise jus primae noctis over their brides.
