The Laurissilva forest of the island of Madeira is at present the remnant of a primitive forest cover that has resisted five centuries of humanization. According to contemporary accounts of the discovery of Madeira (1420), the whole island was covered with a large and dense grove, which is why Portuguese navigators named it Madeira.
