Flora and fauna

In Austria, wildlife is represented in all its diversity. It is dominated by the Central European fauna: in the forests that cover most of the country, you can find deer, rabbits, pheasants, foxes, badgers, martens and partridges. Among the permanent residents of these places are chamois, marmots, eagles and mountain jackdaws. Herons, spoonbills, pelicans and wild geese live in the reed beds near Lake Neusiedlersee. In recent years, Austria has once again become home to a small population of bears, which are mainly found in the densely wooded southern and central mountain regions.

The local fauna is also impressive with its diversity: in addition to deciduous and coniferous forests, in the east of the country you can find salt marshes and steppes, while edelweiss and heather grow in the western highlands.

Großglockner High Alpine Road

The Großglockner High Alpine Road runs in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park and leads to the highest mountain in Austria, the Großglockner("Big Bell"). The famous alpine road of the Eastern Alps with a length of 48 km is famous for panoramic views of the unique mountain ranges.

Along with breathtaking natural and mountainous landscapes, the Großglockner High Alpine Road is rich in tradition, culture and history. Artifacts found during archaeological excavations prove that a road that crossed the valley of the Alps ran here for three and a half thousand years BC. One of the viewing platforms of the modern Kaiser Franz Josef Peak road is named after Kaiser Franz Josef, who in 1856 climbed on foot to this point of the mountain. Along the flowering alpine meadows, fragrant mountain forests and majestic cliffs, a panoramic road rises to the giant Großglockner Mountain. Nature lovers enjoy a fabulous view of Pasteur, the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps, at the “Kaiser Franz Josef Summit''. Marmots frolic nearby and, if you're lucky, you can see graceful mountain chamois.

The Großglockner High Alpine Road is an unforgettable experience for both adults and children. While children are having fun in one of the four themed playgrounds along the road, adults can visit numerous information points and learn a lot about the extraordinary mountain, flora and fauna:

Activities

Today, the beauty of these lands, as well as the name of Mozart associated with them, makes Salzburg the second most popular city in Austria after the beauty of Vienna.

The Salzburg region is unique in its own way. Here everyone can find the perfect vacation for themselves. For lovers of active recreation there are wonderful ski resorts; for those who prefer wellness procedures - thermal hotels and hospitals, who dream of escaping from the bustle of the city and recuperating in natural corners untouched by civilization - quiet, mountain hotels and hiking trails. For lovers of urban tourism, the magnificent Salzburg itself - the administrative and cultural center of the region - will provide stunning examples of Baroque and medieval architecture, sculpture and painting, introduce the history of the birth and life of the great Mozart and the medieval alchemist and physician Philip Aureol Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim, better known as the pseudonym Paracelsius.

The Salzburg region is rich, above all, in magnificent mountain routes. In winter, lovers of this type of recreation from all over Europe come to local ski resorts. Alpine resorts of Salzburg are in second place in popularity among tourists after Tyrol. The most scenic route, the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, crosses the southern part of the province. There are many thermal springs, waterfalls, lakes in the area, as well as the largest ice cave on the planet - Eisriesenwelt.

The picturesque valley of Salzburg Gasteinertall holds the secrets of healing heart disease, rheumatism, gastrointestinal tract and certain types of allergies.

Healing springs rich in radon flow here. Their unique properties were already known by the Celts and ancient Romans. Now in the valley of the Gaschteiner-Ache there is a balneological resort, where the flower of Austrian society comes, as well as members of European royal families. Treatment at the resort can be combined with skiing or snowboarding. The healing springs of this valley are adjacent to ski resorts that are interesting for athletes of all skill levels. Walking trails close to resorts and small towns, as if descended from glossy postcards, will be a real gift for nature lovers. Not far from the town of Zell am See is the Hoch Tauern National Park, through which passes the most beautiful hiking trail in the Austrian Alps - Pinzgauer Spaziergang.

Of course, the city of Salzburg itself remains the main attraction of the region. The unique combination of a wealth of architectural monuments with picturesque alpine surroundings gives Salzburg the right to claim the title of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The stormy urban planning activities of the rulers-archbishops captured the influence of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque. For example, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau(reigned 1587-1612) purposefully Italianized Salzburg, hoping to turn it into “German Rome''. The most famous architect of the Austrian Baroque, Johann Fischer von Erlach, began his career here.

Climate in Salzburg

November and the first half of December in Salzburg are often delightful with sunny days, the temperature is usually around +7°С. By 12th of December it gets colder. Forecasters call this period the "Christmas depression", when snow, falling in the valleys, does not melt until the next warming. The temperature ranges between 0 and -5 degrees.

From the first week of January, real winter begins with heavy snowfalls and low temperatures. Statistics show that very cold winters occur in Austria once every 10 years. This was the case in 2006 and 2017, when the temperature dropped to -25°С and reservoirs froze, which is rare.

Several times during the winter, the warm anticyclone Föhn comes to Austria from the south. With it, a strong wind begins to blow up to 150 kilometers per hour and the temperature can jump during the day from -5°С to +15°С. After 2-3 days, the cyclone leaves and the temperatures return to minus marks again.

Until mid-May, the weather often changes and a cold snap is possible even with snow at altitudes over 1000 meters. Salzburg, by the way, is 420 meters above sea level. Only after May 15(the days of the five ice saints) can we talk about the stabilization of the weather and the arrival of summer. In 2017, for example, snow fell in the mountains until mid-May. The temperature from the second half of May to the beginning of August ranges from +20°С to +30°С. In July, temperatures over +35°C are also not uncommon.
